THE ESG STORY: ICARUS OR CINDERELLA
Purely as a matter of financial theory, high demand for highly rated ESG stocks should depress the returns available from them; should investors be worried?
My colleague Fadi Zaher, Head of Index Solutions, has addressed this question. ‘From ancient myths and legends to modern Hollywood blockbusters, most of the stories we tell ourselves can fit into just a few narrative archetypes’. Do any of these narrative archetypes fit the great story of asset management today: the popularity of investing according to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations?

Martina leads the Assurance practice at EY Financial Services. She works extensively across the global insurance and banking landscape and has significant experience leading large teams in an environment where there is on-going change. In 2019 she was awarded Accountancy Leader of the year at the Women in Finance Awards.
